Dr. Shahi trained as a general surgeon at Western University, London, Ontario. He was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1998. In 2009, he was admitted to the American College of Surgeons as well. He is currently a fellow in good standing of both these colleges.

Dr. Shahi has been practicing as an independent consultant in general surgery in Ontario for more than 20 years. 

He is also licensed to practice in 5 other Canadian provinces. He is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Sciences at Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) in Ontario, Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador, and Dalhousie University (adjunct) in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
